Nine people quizzed over priest`s killing


Nine  people are being interrogated by police in Zanzibar in connection with the killing of of the Roman Catholic Priest Evaristus Mushi on February 17, this year. Father Mushi was buried on Wednesday at Kitope in North Unguja Region.
The Zanzibar Director of Criminal Investigation Assistant Commissioner of Police Ilembo Yussuf, said the suspects were arrested by the task force formed by the investigative officers from Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar.
 “We interrogated them as the first step to seek and arrest those responsible for the killing, said DCI Ilembo. He declined to name them saying it will interfere with the investigation.
The team of investigators is collecting information to help catch those responsible for the incident, he said, calling on law abiding citizens to volunteer information on the people plotting acts of sabotage against religious leaders in the island.
He assured them that their identities would be protected. Meanwhile the Minister of State in the Second Vice-President Mohamed Aboud Mohamed said plans to bring in international agencies have reached advanced stages and that they were expected to arrive in Zanzibar any time.
Aboud said the move was in implementation of the instructions given by President Jakaya Kikwete and Zanzibar President Dr Ali Mohamed Shein for the security forces to cooperate in tracking the killers.
